Collector FAQ

Why pay for something that is free?

The image itself is free — infinitely reproducible and unowned — yet within the ZERØARTS system, the image is abstracted and made finite.

What is acquired is not the image itself, but a numbered, authenticated, and traceable instance of it. In its original form, the work exists as an infinite image: unbounded, unverified, and universally accessible. Within ZERØARTS, it is defined, cataloged, and issued as a closed edition, a physical object with provenance and verifiable authenticity.

Value is not derived from access. It is established through:

  • Scarcity — editions are controlled and deliberately limited
  • Authentication — every edition is verified and traceable
  • Provenance — documentation ensures a permanent, collectible record

The image remains public, but the edition transforms it into a finite, collectible, and conceptually framed object.

What exactly am I purchasing?

You are not purchasing the image itself.

You are acquiring a finite, authenticated instance — a tangible, numbered edition issued within the controlled ZERØARTS system, complete with verification, provenance, and traceable authenticity.

If the image is public domain, what makes this valuable?

The source image remains free and infinitely reproducible. Its value does not come from access, but from the way it is edited and transformed into a finite, authenticated, and collectible edition.

Value is established through:

  • Limitation — small, deliberately restricted edition sizes
  • Authentication — verified, traceable, and documented
  • Material production — museum-quality printing and paper
  • Placement within a controlled system — serialized, numbered, and cataloged

The image is public.
The edition is not.

What does “limited edition” mean?

Each release is strictly limited to a fixed number.

Once the edition is complete, no additional works will be produced in that format.

How is this different from a reproduction?

A reproduction is unlimited and unverified.

This is a defined, numbered, and authenticated object, issued within a closed system that establishes provenance and traceability.

What is the ZERØ SYSTEM?

ZERØ defines the point of abstraction between:

  • image from the infinite archive (public domain)
  • and the finite edition (release catalog)

All works are issued from this origin point and exist within a numbered and traceable sequence.

How is authenticity verified?

  • unique authentication ID
  • embedded security elements
  • documentation within the ZERØARTS system

These establish integrity, provenance, and ownership.

Will more editions be released?

No.

Each edition is:

  • format-specific
  • size-specific
  • strictly limited

Once issued, it is closed.

What materials are used?

Each edition is printed as an archival pigment (Giclée) print on museum-grade, acid-free paper.

The combination of high-quality inks and premium papers ensures longevity, color stability, and museum-quality presentation.

    Does ZERØARTS modify the original?

The Working Proof, limited to only 1-3 copies, functions like a record label’s test pressing of a reissue. These early editions preserve the original image almost entirely, serving as a prototype to validate the ZERØARTS system. Each WP includes embedded security and verification features, ensuring provenance, authenticity, and traceability within the serialized catalog. WPs are both functional working trials and collectible objects, maintaining the integrity of the original while preparing a control example against which other impressions are compared.

The Ultra edition, limited to 10-15 copies, takes the work further. Each piece is systematically edited and abstracted, translating the historical image into a contemporary, finite art object. While the source remains fully credited, the Ultra edition expresses a reinterpretation, balancing fidelity to the original within the philosophical process of the ZERØARTS system. Attention to process, materiality, and embedded authentication distinguishes the final edit as a fully realized collectible.

Is this intended as an art investment?

ZERØARTS does not position works as financial instruments.

Each work is issued within a system that establishes:

    • scarcity
    • provenance
    • ownership

Value is a function of these conditions.

For questions regarding transfer and resale, see Resale.

    What do I receive?

    • 1 × limited edition print
    • individually numbered within the edition
    • authentication documentation
    • digital provenance record

    Who is the artist?

The work is attributed to the original source.

ZERØARTS does not claim authorship. It defines, edits and publishes the edition.

Authorship is zero. The system is the work.

    ZERØ is the origin.
    The point of abstraction.
It divides the infinite from the finite.
